The Process Equals The Goal - Mako Athletics

All too often I get caught up thinking about the end goal and I forget about the process that it takes to achieve that end goal. I was reminding of this twice last week, by two gentlemen much wiser than myself. Each said to enjoy the work that was involved in the creation. At the time it was hard for me to understand what they were saying, as I was covered in sweat and dirt tearing carpet out of the front office. It wasn’t until a few days later when I had some time to sit down and think, that I began to comprehend what each of these gentlemen were saying.

As a coach I get to see people progress everyday, sometimes they don’t even realize or have forgotten how far they have come. I always try to step in and remind them, you started here, and now look what you have accomplished. I see the process happen before my eyes, and it is amazing watching people transform their lives.

The problem is most of us forget the change we have made, or how hard we worked to make that change happen. It usually goes something like this: We set a goal with a timeline to finish said goal, and then we attack with everything we have. Pouring our sweat, blood, and tears into every task associated with said goal. Once we reach the goal, a sense of joy even euphoria comes over us, but this is short lived, as we continue to want more. There is nothing wrong with wanting more, don’t get me wrong we should always strive to achieve perfection, or as gymnasts say VIRTUOSITY!

I am saying we need to enjoy the process of achieving those goals. As the great Ferris Bueller once said “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” I don’t know about you, but I sure don’t want to miss out on life. So it is with this letter that I implore each and everyone of you to enjoy the process, and love what you are doing.
